What makes the Celestron Origin Mark II's f/2.2 RASA optics special for astrophotography?
The f/2.2 focal ratio of the 152mm RASA optics is extremely "fast," meaning it gathers a large amount of light in a short period. This allows the Origin to use very brief exposures (typically 10 seconds) to capture deep-sky objects. Origin excels at short exposures and automatically rejects frames with minor tracking errors.
Is the AI image processing in the Origin Mark II app altering my original data?
No. The AI algorithms stack and process the images in real time, with denoise, AI Gradient Removal and AI Deconvolution (final master only). It is not generative AI and does not add any information that wasn't in the original frames. For those who prefer manual control, the Origin can save all the raw, unprocessed FITS images, which you can download via a USB drive for processing with your own software.
Can I use my own filters with the Celestron Origin Mark II?
Yes. The Origin has an integrated filter drawer located on the optical tube that accepts standard 1.25" and 2" mounted filters. Optional filters are especially useful for imaging nebulae from light-polluted skies.
Can the Origin Mark II image the Moon and planets?
Yes, with SnapShot mode. Stacking is turned off and Origin takes a single image and saves it to your device's camera roll. SnapShot mode is ideal for sub-exposures under one second and is the correct mode for the Moon, planets and terrestrial imaging, using manual camera settings.
Does the Celestron Origin need to be connected to my home WiFi to work?
No. The Origin has its own built-in WiFi network ("Direct Connect" mode) that you connect to with your phone or tablet. This allows you to use it anywhere, even at remote dark-sky sites. If you are at home, you can optionally configure it to connect to your home WiFi network ("Network Connect" mode), which can give a larger operating range, letting you move more than 30 feet away from Origin.
How long does the 97.9 Wh battery last in cold weather?
The integrated 97.9 Wh LiFePO4 battery is rated for 6+ hours of use. However, like all batteries, performance is affected by temperature. In cold conditions (below 50°F / 10°C), the total runtime will be reduced. The automated dew heater will also consume more power in cold, humid conditions, further impacting battery life. Near or below freezing (32°F/0°C), watch the app for low battery warnings. The included 12V DC power adapter can run Origin on external AC power.
Do I need a laptop to use the Celestron Origin Mark II?
No. The entire system is controlled by its onboard Raspberry Pi 4 computer and the Celestron Origin app on a compatible iOS or Android smartphone or tablet. No external laptop is required for setup, alignment, targeting, or imaging. You only need a computer if you choose to download the raw FITS files for manual post-processing.
Can multiple people view what the Origin is seeing at the same time?
Yes. Multiple users can download the Celestron Origin app, connect to the Origin's WiFi network, and view the live image feed simultaneously on their own devices. This makes it a fantastic tool for outreach or sharing the experience with family and friends without having to line up at an eyepiece. You can also cast your device's screen to a big-screen TV with a compatible smart TV or casting device.
What is the "Solar Warning" for the Origin?
Celestron provides a critical safety warning: Never look directly at the Sun with the naked eye or with an optic (unless you have the proper solar filter). Permanent and irreversible eye damage may result. Never use your optic to project an image of the Sun onto any surface, as internal heat build-up can damage the optic and any accessories attached to it. Never leave your optic unsupervised.
