Will the Celestron Padded Bag fit an 8" Newtonian or non-Celestron SCT?
This bag is specifically designed for the compact form factor of Celestron's 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain and EdgeHD optical tubes. Its internal length is 432mm (17"). Most 8" Newtonian reflectors are significantly longer and will not fit. Other brands of 8" SCTs may fit, but you must verify that their length, including any focusers or accessories, is less than 17".
How much protection does the Celestron 8" Telescope Bag offer for air travel?
This is a padded soft case designed for protecting your telescope from common transport hazards like car rides and carrying to an observing site. The 16mm EPE foam provides excellent protection against bumps and scrapes. However, it is not a hard-sided flight case and is not recommended for checked airline baggage, where it could be subjected to severe impacts.
What accessories can I store in the external pocket of the Celestron bag?
The external zippered pocket is designed for smaller, essential accessories. It can comfortably hold items such as a 1.25" diagonal, a few eyepieces, a red dot finder, or cables. It is not large enough for a bulky 2" diagonal or a large collection of heavy accessories.
Are the internal straps sufficient to hold the C8 optical tube securely?
Yes. The bag includes sewn-in cinching straps made of PP webbing. When tightened, these straps hold the optical tube firmly against the padded interior, preventing it from shifting or sliding during transport. This is critical for maintaining the telescope's collimation.
Is the 900 Denier Polyester material waterproof?
The 900 Denier polyester fabric is highly weather-resistant, meaning it will protect your equipment from light rain, dew, or mist. However, it is not fully waterproof. The case should not be submerged or left in a heavy downpour for an extended period.
Can I carry the bag with my finder scope still attached to my EdgeHD 8"?
For the best fit and protection, it is highly recommended to remove the finder scope and its bracket before placing the optical tube in the bag. The internal dimensions are tailored for the OTA itself. The finder scope can be stored safely in the external zippered accessory pocket.
