Daystar 0.33X Tilt Reducer
- 0.33X Focal Reduction Factor
- Designed for the Daystar Combo Quark Filter
- Enables Full-Disk Solar Imaging with Small Sensors
- Reduces Exposure Times by Approximately 9x
- Supports 17.5mm and 12.5mm Camera Backfocus
With a powerful 0.33X reduction factor, the Daystar 0.33X Tilt Reducer makes full-disk solar imaging possible when paired with the Combo Quark filter and a small-sensor camera. This reducer is engineered for a native 17.5mm backfocus and is also compatible with 12.5mm systems, dramatically widening your field of view for comprehensive solar portraits.
This is Daystar's most powerful focal reducer, compressing your telescope's focal length to just one-third of its native value. This transformation allows you to fit the entire solar disk onto smaller imaging sensors, a task that is often impossible at a telescope's native focal length. The 0.33X reduction also shortens exposure times by a factor of approximately nine, allowing you to use higher frame rates to freeze atmospheric seeing and capture sharper details.
By creating a much faster focal ratio, the 0.33X reducer significantly minimizes interference fringes (Newton's rings), a common artifact in narrowband solar imaging. This reduces or even eliminates the need for filter tilt, simplifying the tuning process for an evenly illuminated, high-contrast image. The reducer is designed for direct connection to cameras with a 17.5mm backfocus, and can also achieve a 12.5mm backfocus when used with a 5mm spacer (not included).
The primary purpose of the Daystar 0.33X Tilt Reducer is to shrink the image scale of a telescope, allowing imagers to capture the entire solar disk on cameras with smaller sensors. It is specifically designed for use with the Daystar Combo Quark H-alpha filter.
The 0.33X reduction makes the effective focal ratio of your telescope much faster. This concentrates light more intensely on the sensor, reducing required exposure times to approximately one-ninth of what they would be without the reducer. This is a major advantage for "lucky imaging" techniques.
Whether you can achieve a full-disk image depends on your telescope's native focal length. However, the Daystar 0.33X Tilt Reducer is specifically designed to make this possible for many common telescope and small-sensor combinations like the ASI174MM. It dramatically increases your chances of fitting the entire sun in the frame.
The name can be confusing. It's a focal reducer that, as a side effect of creating a faster optical system, reduces the interference patterns that you would normally compensate for by tilting a narrowband filter. Because it minimizes the need for tilt adjustments, it's named for the problem it helps solve.
The Daystar 0.33X Tilt Reducer is optimized for two common backfocus distances:
| Reduction Factor | 0.33X |
| Primary Compatibility | Daystar Combo Quark Hydrogen Alpha Filter |
| Native Backfocus | 17.5mm |
| Alternate Backfocus | 12.5mm (with user-supplied 5mm spacer) |
| Camera Connection | T-Thread (M42x0.75) |
