Do I need counterweights for the iOptron HEM44 mount?
For payloads up to 44 lbs (20 kg), the HEM44 does not require a counterweight or shaft. If your payload exceeds this, add the optional counterweight shaft (Φ20x200mm, M16 thread) and a 10 lbs counterweight to increase the maximum capacity to 55 lbs (25 kg).
How do I polar align the iOptron HEM44?
The iPolar versions include iOptron's internal iPolar electronic polar scope. It connects to a 64-bit Windows PC via USB 2.0 and guides you on screen to an alignment with ~30 arcsec precision, and it can plate-solve the star field near the pole even when Polaris is blocked by trees or buildings. With the other versions, use your own electronic polar alignment method.
Can the iOptron HEM44EC be used for unguided astrophotography?
Yes, the EC versions are designed with unguided imaging in mind. The zero-backlash StrainWave drive combined with Realtime PEC from the high-precision RA encoder can make unguided exposures of several minutes possible with a well-aligned mount and a short-to-medium focal length telescope.
How do I control the iOptron HEM44 remotely?
Every HEM44 version has built-in Wi-Fi, so you can connect and control it wirelessly from a computer, tablet or smartphone using compatible planetarium or imaging software. The Go2Nova® 8409 hand controller provides full GoTo control in the field and has a USB port for a direct, wired connection to a PC.
Can the iOptron HEM44 handle an 8" SCT for imaging nebulae like the Orion Nebula (M42)?
Yes. A typical 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain weighs between 12-15 lbs, well under the HEM44's 44 lbs counterweight-free capacity. That leaves plenty of room for a camera, guide scope and accessories, making it an excellent portable platform for deep-sky imaging.
