What is the difference between the SkyHunter versions?
Every version shares the same 2.9 lb GoTo mount head with a 7 lb payload, Wi-Fi, internal battery, counterweight shaft and 3 lb counterweight. The AZ versions include no polar-alignment base and are intended for alt-azimuth use. The EQ/AZ versions add the EQ base (0º to 80º latitude), the w/ iPolar versions add the iPolar electronic polar scope, and the w/ iPolar & Precision Base versions combine iPolar with the Precision AZ/EQ base (0º to 90º). Each configuration comes as Mount Only or as a Tripod Kit with the #3221 stainless steel tripod and #8041 pier extension.
What kind of telescope works best with the iOptron SkyHunter mount?
The SkyHunter is designed for small, lightweight instruments. It excels with wide-field refractors (60-70mm class), camera lenses up to 300mm, and compact Maksutov-Cassegrains, as long as the total payload remains under its 7 lb (3.2 kg) capacity. It is not suitable for larger telescopes such as 8" SCTs or 80mm+ refractors.
Can I use the SkyHunter AZ version for deep-sky astrophotography?
In alt-azimuth mode the mount tracks on two axes, which introduces field rotation in long exposures, so the AZ version is best suited to visual observing, the Moon and planets, and terrestrial viewing. The optional EQ base (0º to 80º latitude, ±5º azimuth) converts the SkyHunter into a polar-aligned equatorial mount for long exposures. The EQ/AZ versions include a base from the start.
How does the iPolar make polar alignment easier?
The iPolar, included with the iPolar versions, is an electronic polar scope that uses a small internal camera to plate-solve the stars near the celestial pole. Instead of kneeling to look through a small optical scope, you connect the mount to a computer via USB and follow the on-screen instructions to adjust altitude and azimuth. It is faster, more accurate and far more comfortable than traditional methods, especially when Polaris is not visible.
Does the SkyHunter need an external power source?
No. The SkyHunter has an internal 3.7V rechargeable Li-Poly battery that provides up to 10 hours of operation at 20ºC and recharges via a standard 5V MiniUSB connection. The mount is rated for -10ºC to 40ºC; like all lithium-polymer batteries, runtime is reduced in colder temperatures, so a USB power bank is a useful backup on winter nights.
How do I control the iOptron SkyHunter mount?
The primary method is the built-in Wi-Fi, using a smartphone, tablet or computer with apps such as iOptron Commander Lite or SkySafari, and it can join a ZWO ASIAIR workflow. It is also compatible with the optional iOptron 8410 hand controller. For advanced imaging, connect a PC via USB and use the ASCOM platform with software such as N.I.N.A. or Sequence Generator Pro.
Can I image the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) with a 200mm camera lens on the SkyHunter?
Absolutely. A DSLR or mirrorless camera with a 200mm lens is well within the 7 lb payload. Operated in EQ mode on the EQ or Precision AZ/EQ base and properly polar aligned, the 144-tooth worm wheels and servo motors track M31 precisely enough for detailed multi-minute exposures that reveal its dust lanes and outer arms.
