What is included with the Sky-Watcher Evostar EDX 120?
Sky-Watcher ships the Evostar EDX 120 in a padded aluminum case with the 2.8-inch Crayford-style focuser, mounting rings with a carry handle, a V-style dovetail plate, a camera angle adjuster, a thread-on dew shield, a focuser adapter ring, a spacer and a 1.25-inch to 2-inch adapter. A star diagonal, eyepieces and a finder are not included.
What kind of mount does the Evostar EDX 120 need?
The tube is 774mm long with the dew shield retracted and comes with a V-style (Vixen-style) dovetail, the standard used by most small and mid-sized mounts. For long-exposure imaging, choose an equatorial mount with comfortable payload headroom for the tube, rings, camera and guiding gear, such as a mount in the Sky-Watcher HEQ5-R class.
Can I use 1.25-inch eyepieces with the Evostar EDX 120?
Yes. The focuser accepts 2-inch accessories, and the included 1.25-inch to 2-inch adapter lets you use standard 1.25-inch eyepieces and diagonals.
Is the Evostar EDX 120 a good telescope for astrophotography?
Yes. The FPL-53 doublet controls color well, and the dual-speed focuser, camera angle adjuster and included spacer and adapter ring are designed for imaging. Like all refractors it has some natural field curvature, so for stars that stay sharp to the corners of larger sensors, pair it with a field flattener matched to its focal length. Contact us and we will confirm the current compatible options.
Why choose this doublet over a triplet apochromatic refractor?
A triplet can offer a small edge in color correction, but it adds glass, weight and cost. The Evostar EDX 120 delivers apochromatic performance from a single FPL-53 element in a lighter, more affordable tube, which lets you put more of your budget into the mount and camera.
Is the Evostar EDX 120 a permanent model?
Sky-Watcher lists the Evostar EDX 120 as a limited edition available while supplies last.
