  • Sky-Watcher Skymax 200DX Maksutov-Cassegrain Telescope

The Sky-Watcher Skymax 200DX brings the high contrast of the Skymax Maksutov-Cassegrain series to a 200mm aperture with a 2000mm focal length at f/10. Beyond sharp lunar and planetary views, it delivers a 44mm image height for full-frame cameras, and the optional 0.7x reducer turns it into a 1400mm f/7 imaging instrument. A Zero Shift belt-drive focuser and a built-in cooling fan address the two classic weak points of large Maksutovs: mirror shift and slow cool-down.

    2000mm Focal Length in a 665mm Tube

The folded Maksutov-Cassegrain light path packs a 2000mm focal length into an optical tube just 665mm long and 235mm in diameter. The tube is only about a third as long as its focal length, but at 12 kg (26.46 lbs) the Skymax 200DX is still a heavy telescope that calls for a solid equatorial mount and is best suited to a permanent installation.

44mm Image Height for Full-Frame Sensors

Traditional Maksutovs are built mainly for visual and planetary use. The Skymax 200DX is designed with a 44mm image height, wide enough to cover full-frame camera sensors, so it doubles as a deep-sky imaging telescope for galaxies, planetary nebulae and globular clusters.

    • Optional 0.7x Reducer (S20224): Brings the system to 1400mm at f/7 with a 43mm image circle, a standard M48 thread and 55mm of back focus, cutting exposure times roughly in half.
    • Native f/10 Imaging: Use the full 2000mm focal length for small galaxies, planetary nebulae and high-resolution lunar mosaics.

Zero Shift Focusing and Active Cooling

The Zero Shift belt-drive focuser is designed to significantly reduce the mirror shift that makes focusing large catadioptric telescopes frustrating, and a focus distance indicator from 38m to infinity shows where you are in the focus range. A built-in 12V cooling fan and cooling vents help the optics reach ambient temperature faster, so you get steady, sharp views sooner after setting up.

94% Reflectivity RAQ Mirrors and MHTC Corrector

The Skymax 200DX mirrors are made of borosilicate and coated with Sky-Watcher's Radiant Aluminum Quartz (RAQ) coatings for 94% reflectivity. The fully multi-coated corrector plate uses Sky-Watcher's Metallic High-Transmission Coatings (MHTC) to maximize transmission and contrast.

  • How does the Skymax 200DX compare with the Skymax 180?

The Skymax 200DX gathers about 23% more light than the 180mm Skymax 180. Its 2000mm focal length at f/10 is shorter and faster than the 2700mm at f/15 of the Skymax 180, giving a wider field of view and shorter exposures, and its 44mm image height is designed for imaging with large sensors.

Can I use the Skymax 200DX for deep-sky astrophotography?

Yes. With a 44mm image height it covers full-frame sensors at its native f/10. For shorter exposures, the optional Skymax 200DX 0.7x Reducer (S20224) brings it to 1400mm at f/7 with a 43mm image circle and 55mm of back focus.

What mount do I need for the Skymax 200DX?

The optical tube weighs 12 kg (26.46 lbs) and mounts with a D-style dovetail plate. For visual use and especially for imaging, choose a solid equatorial mount with a D-style (Losmandy-style) saddle and generous payload headroom, such as a mount in the Sky-Watcher EQ6-R class.

What is the cooling fan for, and how is it powered?

Large closed-tube telescopes take time to cool to the night air, and until they do, tube currents soften the image. The built-in 12V fan and cooling vents speed up this process. The Skymax 200DX includes a battery pack to power the fan.

How large is the central obstruction?

The secondary mirror is 70mm in diameter, and the total central obstruction is 22% by area.

Can I use 2-inch eyepieces and diagonals?

Yes. The Skymax 200DX includes a 2-inch visual back, so you can use 2-inch diagonals and eyepieces, as well as 1.25-inch accessories with a suitable adapter. A camera extender adapter is also included for imaging.
