  • Starlight Instruments Feather Touch 3.5" R&P Focuser Kit for FSQ-106

This Starlight Instruments Feather Touch 3.5" Focuser is engineered specifically for the Takahashi FSQ-106ED, providing a heavy-duty rack and pinion mechanism with an 18-20 pound lifting capacity. The focuser features a precise 10:1 reduction ratio for critical fine adjustments and a custom machined drawtube with M98x1 female threads, so Takahashi accessories thread directly into the drawtube. Starlight designed it with the FSQ-106ED in mind because that telescope has short in-focus. It weighs 4.540 pounds including the adapter and rotates 360 degrees on its locking collar.

Why a Custom Focuser for the FSQ-106ED

This is a custom 3.5" focuser for the FSQ106ED. The drawtube was custom machined with M98x1 female threads because the FSQ-106ED has short in-focus, and so that Takahashi accessories can be threaded directly into the drawtube. The Takahashi FSQ106ED is the only known fit.

Helical Rack & Pinion: An 18-20 lb Lifting Capacity

The core of this 3.5" focuser is its helical rack and pinion drive, with the 18-20 pound lifting capacity of Starlight's 3.5" focusers. The helical rack and pinion gives smoother operation, increased carry loads and virtually zero backlash.

The 10:1 Feather Touch Planetary Reduction System

Fine focus comes from the Feather Touch 10:1 dual-speed reduction. This friction-based planetary assembly translates approximately ten turns of the anodized aluminum fine focus knob into one turn of the coarse knob, allowing you to make minute, repeatable adjustments. The stainless steel housing, high grade stainless steel ball bearings in a brass cage and tool steel reduction pin are made to tight tolerances, which gives smooth, virtually zero backlash operation.

360° Locking Collar for Precise Image Framing

The focuser body connects to its telescope adapter via a locking collar, which allows for 360-degree rotation of the entire focuser and imaging train. To frame your target, you simply turn the locking collar counter-clockwise, rotate the camera to the desired orientation, and then tighten the collar clockwise to lock it securely in place. Starlight applies a dampening grease between the focuser and the tube adapter, so they should not be separated unless necessary.

    A Custom M98x1 Drawtube for the FSQ-106ED

The custom drawtube has M98x1 female threads so that Takahashi accessories can be threaded directly into it. A threaded connection is more secure than a compression fitting.

1.5" Travel with Internal Baffling and Millimeter Scale

The drawtube provides a full 1.5" (38.1 mm) of travel, with the 10:1 fine focus knob. A millimeter scale on the side for repeatable focus positions between sessions or after changing equipment. Inside, the drawtube features glare-resistant black baffling to maximize contrast by suppressing stray light reflections from reaching the sensor.

User Adjustments: Drawtube Tension, Brake, and End Cap Collimation

You can tailor the focuser's feel and performance to your specific payload. A drawtube tension nut allows you to set the ideal drag, while a separate brake thumbscrew on the underside of the pinion assembly locks the drawtube. Additionally, most end caps feature three set screws, for collimation: loosen them with a 1/16 hex key, unscrew the end cap about 1/4 turn, adjust the tilt and tighten.

A Platform for HSM, PDMS, and Focuser Boss II Integration

The HSM35 Handy Stepper Motor fits any 3.5" Feather Touch focuser, and the PDMS has a version for 3.5" Feather Touch focusers (both sold separately). The focus knobs come off with a 1/16 hex key for the motor installation. A Starlight controller such as the Focuser Boss II runs the motor through ASCOM.

In-House USA Machining from Steel and Aluminum

Every major component of the Feather Touch focuser is designed, machined, anodized, and assembled by Starlight Instruments in the USA. The construction utilizes hardened stainless steel, steel, and anodized aluminum . Starlight credits its in-house manufacturing for its quality control.

Mounting and Orienting on the FSQ-106ED

Installation is straightforward. After removing the stock focuser, attach the Feather Touch adapter to the telescope (in most cases it screws in place). Then loosen the locking collar, rotate the focuser into the desired orientation and lock it, and collimate with the end cap screws if necessary.

Dual 8-32 Threaded Mounting Points for Finderscopes

The main focuser housing is machined with two sets of standard 8-32 UNC threaded holes. These mounting points are designed for attaching a finderscope base and bracket (sold separately). Filler screws sit in the holes until used; with third-party bases, use screws that are not too long or they can damage the drawtube.

  • Why upgrade the stock Takahashi FSQ-106ED focuser to this Feather Touch?

The primary reasons are lifting capacity and focusing precision. The 3.5" focuser has an 18-20 pound lifting capacity and a 10:1 dual-speed fine focus, and this version's M98x1 female drawtube lets Takahashi accessories thread directly into it.

What is the lifting capacity of this FSQ-106ED focuser?

The 3.5" Feather Touch focusers are rated at 18-20 pounds. Add up your camera and accessories to check they are within that figure.

Can I rotate the Starlight Instruments focuser on my FSQ-106ED for framing?

Yes. The focuser features a 360-degree locking collar. You can loosen the collar, rotate your entire imaging train to the desired orientation for framing your target, and then tighten it to lock the position.

How does the 18-20 pound capacity handle a heavy imaging train on the FSQ-106ED?

Within the 18-20 pound figure, the rack and pinion drive moves the load and the brake can lock the drawtube. Keep at least light drawtube tension, which prevents drawtube tilt and image shift.

When imaging the Horsehead Nebula (B33) with my FSQ-106ED, how does the 10:1 fine focus help?

Imaging high-contrast details like the silhouette of the Horsehead Nebula against the faint red glow of IC 434 needs careful focus. The 10:1 fine focus reduction allows you to make extremely small, controlled adjustments to the focus point. This lets you dial in the tightest possible stars, which in turn maximizes the sharpness of the boundary between the dark nebula and the emission background.

How do I image the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) with my FSQ-106ED and prevent tilt?

The key is a rigid, threaded connection. This focuser's M98x1 female thread allows you to connect your camera and any field flatteners or reducers directly to the drawtube. A threaded connection is more secure than a compression ring, and the end cap collimation screws let you remove remaining tilt.

Is this FSQ-106ED focuser compatible with other Takahashi telescopes?

No. This specific kit is custom-designed exclusively for the Takahashi FSQ-106ED. The Takahashi FSQ106ED is its known fit.

Can I use this Feather Touch focuser visually with a 2" diagonal?

The drawtube has M98x1 female threads for Takahashi accessories. Starlight's site asks buyers to select the tube adapter ring and end cap needed; for a 2" diagonal you need a part that ends in a 2" compression ring.

What motor options are available for this FSQ-106ED focuser?

This 3.5" focuser is compatible with Starlight Instruments' motor systems designed for this size. The recommended options are:

    • HSM35 (Handy Stepper Motor): listed for any 3.5" Feather Touch focuser; turning its housing disengages the gears for manual focus.
    • PDMS (Posi Drive Motor System): a timing-belt drive that Starlight offers for heavier image trains; the PDMS has a 3.5" Feather Touch version.

Both motors are run by a Starlight controller such as the Focuser Boss II, which offers ASCOM control.

How do I adjust the drawtube tension for my camera's weight?

There is a drawtube tension nut on the focuser housing that can be adjusted with a 3/16 hex key. You should set just enough tension to prevent the drawtube from moving on its own while still allowing for smooth motion. Always keep at least light tension on the drawtube to prevent tilt.

Does engaging the brake affect fine focusing on the FSQ-106ED focuser?

Yes, to a limited extent. The brake thumbscrew is designed to lock the drawtube securely. While it is possible to make minor adjustments with the fine focus knob while the brake is engaged, avoid prolonged use in this manner as it can cause premature wear on the internal brake component.

When would I need to use the end cap collimation screws?

You would use the three collimation set screws on the end cap if you detect tilt in your imaging train, which typically appears as elongated stars in the corners of your image. These screws allow you to make minute adjustments to the angle of the end cap, to square the camera to the optical axis.
