Launch Visual AssistantThe Tele Vue Delos 17.3mm eyepiece delivers a 72° apparent field of view with 20mm of eye relief, all within a standard 1.25" barrel. Tele Vue's Ethos design experience made it possible to keep Delos size and weight down while achieving sharpness, linearity and ghost suppression; the 17.3mm weighs 14.4 oz. With a 21.2mm field stop, this eyepiece provides a generous true field for framing a wide range of celestial objects at medium magnification.
The Delos achieves sharpness, linearity (freedom from pincushion distortion) and ghost suppression over the entire field for any speed (f/#) telescope. The 72° apparent field is wide enough to frame large open clusters and nebulae.
The true field of view you see is determined by the eyepiece's 21.2mm field stop and your telescope's focal length. You can calculate it with the formula: True Field = (Eyepiece Field Stop ÷ Telescope Focal Length) x 57.3. For example, in a telescope with a 1200mm focal length, the Delos 17.3mm yields a true field of (21.2mm ÷ 1200mm) x 57.3 = 1.01°.
The exit pupil, which dictates image brightness, is determined by your telescope's f/ratio. Tele Vue's chart gives 3.8, 3.3, 2.5, 1.7 and 1.2mm at f/4.5, f/5.2, f/7, f/10 and f/14. In a fast f/4.5 Newtonian, it produces a bright 3.8mm exit pupil for nebulae. In a typical f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain, it yields a 1.7mm exit pupil for globular clusters.
Every 1¼" Delos, including the 17.3mm, has 20mm of eye relief. The Delos is designed for optimum viewing whether or not you wear eyeglasses, and the generous eye relief also minimizes eye lens fogging in cold weather.
To ensure perfect eye placement, the Delos has an adjustable, locking eyeguard housing. By twisting the lower grip ring, you can slide the eyeguard to the ideal height and lock it in place. For non-eyeglass wearers, start with the housing fully out and slide it down until you just see the full field with your peripheral vision; this also minimizes extraneous outside light. For eyeglass wearers, the eyeguard retracts fully to provide maximum clearance.
Fast Newtonians and Dobsonians show mirror coma. Tele Vue's Paracorr Type-2 removes it and works with scopes as fast as f/3.0, with the greatest results in scopes faster than f/5.0. The Paracorr acts as a 1.15x amplifier, effectively turning an f/4.5 scope into an f/5.2, for which the Delos 17.3mm provides a 3.3mm exit pupil.
Choose a long focal length eyepiece with comfortable eye relief and add a Barlow or Powermate to increase power. A 2x Barlow makes the 17.3mm act as an 8.65mm eyepiece for planets and double stars.
The Delos 17.3mm compares naturally to eyepieces with similar field stops, such as the 19mm Panoptic and 16mm Nagler Type 5.
Their field stops are nearly identical (21.2mm and 21.3mm), so they show almost the same amount of sky. The Delos 17.3mm offers a wider 72° apparent field and a much longer 20mm of eye relief, making it more comfortable, especially for eyeglass wearers. The Panoptic has a 68° field and 13mm of eye relief.
Yes. At least 15mm to 20mm of eye relief is suggested for eyeglass wearers, and the Delos eyeguard housing in its down position gives the full 20mm. You can also use a DIOPTRX in place of glasses.
Grasp the upper and lower rubber grip rings. Twist the lower ring to the left to loosen the mechanism, then slide the eyeguard to your desired height. To lock it, twist the lower ring to the right. You can use the green indicator lines on the barrel to note your preferred position.
A fast f/4.5 Dobsonian has mirror coma whatever the eyepiece. Tele Vue's Paracorr Type-2 eliminates it, with the greatest results in scopes faster than f/5.0.
An 8" f/10 SCT typically has a focal length of around 2032mm. Using the formula (Field Stop ÷ Telescope Focal Length) x 57.3, the true field would be (21.2mm ÷ 2032mm) x 57.3 = 0.60 degrees. That frames the bright core of the Orion Nebula (M42) or the Hercules Cluster (M13).
Yes, the Delos 17.3mm accepts the Tele Vue DIOPTRX astigmatism corrector (the Delos is ideal for it). It locks onto the top of the eyepiece and can be rotated to match your astigmatic axis.
Both lines prioritize comfort and optical correction. The primary difference is the apparent field of view. The Delos series has a 72° AFOV, while the DeLite series has a 62° AFOV. Both have 20mm of eye relief in Tele Vue's chart; the Delos gives the wider view.
Yes. The Delos 17.3mm is compatible with the Tele Vue FoneMate adapter. This accessory allows you to securely clamp a smartphone to the eyepiece for taking afocal photos and videos of celestial objects.
All Tele Vue eyepieces, including the Delos 17.3mm, are covered by a Lifetime Limited Warranty against defects in material or workmanship.
Keep the dust caps on when not in use. To clean the lenses, gently blow away any dust, then use a camel-hair brush for remaining particles. If necessary, use a dedicated lens cleaning fluid on a cotton swab or lens tissue. Take care not to unscrew the chrome barrel, to avoid getting dust and dirt into the eyepiece.
