Does the Wanderer FilterCube 50 work with a RASA 8 or HyperStar system?
No. The FilterCube 50 has a minimum optical thickness (back focus used) of 60.3 mm. This is too long for the back focus requirements of the RASA 8 and HyperStar systems, so it is not supported.
What are the back focus requirements for cameras used with the FilterCube 50 on a RASA 11?
When used with a Celestron RASA 11, the FilterCube 50 is compatible with cameras that have a native back focus of 12.5 mm or less. No additional adapters are required for these cameras.
My 2" mounted filters have a cell taller than 6 mm. Can I use them with the FilterCube 50?
Possibly, but they may get stuck. The FilterCube 50 is designed for 2" filter cells with a height of 6 mm or less (excluding threads). For filters with taller cells, Wanderer Astro offers an optional Low Profile Filter Cell Replacement Kit that you can use to re-house your filter glass for a proper fit.
I can't connect to the FilterCube 50 from my computer. What should I do?
Download and install the USB driver from the official Wanderer Astro website. The ASCOM driver for the filter wheel is included in the WandererEmpire software.
How many filters can the Wanderer FilterCube 50 hold, and what is the "4+1" system?
The FilterCube 50 holds a total of five filters. The "4+1" design refers to its unique mechanism:
-
4 side-flip positions: These hold four filters (typically color or narrowband) in trays that flip into the optical path.
-
1 fixed central position: This holds a fifth filter, usually a Luminance filter, in a fixed position along the central axis.
The central L-filter can be used on its own or in combination with any of the side-flip filters.
How is the Wanderer FilterCube 50 powered and controlled?
The FilterCube 50 is powered and controlled through a single USB 2.0 Type-C port. This connection is rated at 0.5 A, and no separate 12V DC power supply is needed, simplifying cable management on your telescope.
How do I collimate my RASA 11 with the FilterCube 50 installed?
The FilterCube 50 housing has built-in access slots that allow a hex wrench to pass through to reach the RASA's collimation screws. If a screw is blocked by part of the housing, you can simply loosen the RASA's retaining ring and rotate the FilterCube slightly to gain clear access.
When imaging with my RASA 11, do I need to remove the telescope's optical window to use the FilterCube 50?
Yes. As instructed by Celestron in the official RASA white paper, the clear optical window at the front of the RASA must be removed before installing the FilterCube and camera assembly.
How do I manage focus shift in N.I.N.A. when switching between the central L-filter and a side-flip filter like Ha?
Combining the central L-filter with a side filter causes a significant focus shift. In N.I.N.A.'s Advanced Sequencer, you should first determine the approximate focuser position for each filter combination. Then, after a filter change, insert a command that moves the focuser to the approximate focus position before running autofocus or plate solving. This prevents autofocus from failing due to completely defocused stars.
Can I control more than one Wanderer FilterCube 50 from the same imaging PC?
Yes. The Wanderer ASCOM driver is designed to recognize and independently control up to four FilterCube devices connected to a single computer. In software like N.I.N.A., they will appear as "Wanderer FilterCube 1," "Wanderer FilterCube 2," etc., and each can be configured with its own set of filters.
