Is the William Optics Zenithstar 61II ready for astrophotography out of the box?
It comes with the Flat61A flattener, the 2-inch dual-speed focuser and the Bahtinov mask cap. You add a T-mount or camera adapter and set the 67.9 mm backfocus from the flattener to the sensor.
What does the FPL-53 glass do?
The Ohara FPL-53 ED element is what makes the doublet an APO; it gives clear, high-contrast images with minimal color aberration.
What mount suits the Zenithstar 61II?
At 2.2 kg with accessories, a small equatorial mount or star tracker can carry it; add your camera and compare the total with the mount's rated payload. The dual dovetail fits Vixen and Arca Swiss saddles.
How does the Zenithstar 61II frame the Andromeda Galaxy (M31)?
At 360mm, full frame covers about 5.7 x 3.8 degrees and APS-C about 3.7 x 2.5 degrees; M31 (about 3 degrees long) fits on either.
Is the Zenithstar 61II a good choice for viewing planets like Jupiter?
While you can see planets with the Z61II, its strength is wide-field deep-sky viewing and imaging. Its short 360mm focal length is not designed for the high magnification needed to resolve fine details on planets like Jupiter and Saturn. A telescope with a much longer focal length would be a better choice for dedicated planetary observation.
Can I use filters with the Zenithstar 61II?
Yes. The manual shows an M48 filter connected at the end of the flattener: remove part A, thread on the filter, then refit part A.
What is the CAT saddle handle bar for?
Carrying the telescope, and mounting a guide scope: the manual says its Vixen finder type base suits the W.O. UniGuide, with M4 thumb screws and 1/4 and 3/8 threads.
How do I set the 67.9mm back focus for my camera?
For a DSLR or mirrorless camera on a T-mount (55 mm to the sensor), set the flattener's adjustable part to 12.9 mm. For an astronomy camera, subtract the camera, filter wheel, OAG and adapter distance from 67.9 mm and set the adjustable part to the difference.
Which saddles does the dovetail fit?
The manual says the 210 mm dual side dovetail plate suits Vixen and Arca Swiss type saddle plates.
Can I use the Zenithstar 61II for visual observing?
Yes. Use the supplied M54 to 2-inch and 2-inch to 1.25-inch adapters with a diagonal or erecting prism and an eyepiece. Wildlife viewing is among its uses.
