The Kowa Genesis 10.5x44 Binocular puts Kowa's flagship PROMINAR XD optics into a rugged, field-ready design. Its 10.5x magnification pulls in distant subjects through 44 mm XD objective lenses (high resolution ED glass containing fluorite crystal) for sharp images with natural color and high contrast. It gives a 325.5 ft field of view at 1,000 yards and 16.0 mm of eye relief. Built on a 33.2 oz magnesium alloy body, it focuses as close as 5.6 ft, so it works with nearby subjects as well as distant horizons.
At the heart of the Genesis 10.5x44 are Kowa's PROMINAR XD objective lenses. Kowa describes XD as high resolution ED glass containing large amounts of fluorite crystal, and its series page credits the view to 4 Kowa XD lenses. Glass of this kind reduces chromatic aberration (color fringing), so you see the natural colors of a bird's plumage or subtle tonal variations in wildlife, with high contrast and fine detail.
The 325.5 ft field of view at 1,000 yards is wide enough to track moving subjects or scan broad landscapes, and the 10.5x44 has 16.0 mm of eye relief and an exit pupil of about 4.2 mm (44 mm divided by 10.5x). For detailed observation of nearby subjects, the Genesis 10.5x44 focuses down to 5.6 ft, bringing intricate details of insects, plants, or nearby wildlife into sharp relief.
Kowa says the GENESIS PROMINAR range is built to last a lifetime. The Genesis 10.5x44 body is made of magnesium alloy, which gives the benefits of high strength metal in a lightweight structure; the binocular weighs 33.2 oz and measures 6.5 x 5.4 x 2.5 in (length, width, height). Tough rubber armour covers the streamlined, non-slip body. An ultra responsive focus wheel, smooth and solid hinges, twist-up eyecups and a locking diopter ring, which prevents accidental changes to your setting, complete the design.
Kowa says the tough rubber armour makes the GENESIS PROMINAR an extremely durable and reliable binocular, even in the toughest of environments. The Genesis 10.5x44 is fully waterproof and dry nitrogen filled to prevent fogging. Kowa's KR coating repels dirt and fluid, protecting the lenses from dirt and residue.
Choosing between the two 44mm Genesis models involves a direct trade-off between resolving power and viewing comfort. The 8.5x44 model offers a wider field of view and longer eye relief, making it the easier choice for scanning dense habitats. The 10.5x44 provides greater magnification, giving you a distinct advantage in resolving fine details on distant subjects, such as identifying far-off raptors.
First, adjust the interpupillary distance by moving the barrels until you see a single, circular image. Next, close your right eye and use the main focus wheel to get a sharp image for your left eye. Finally, close your left eye, open your right, and use the diopter ring to focus for your right eye. Lock the ring to keep your setting.
Kowa's PROMINAR XD lenses are high resolution ED glass containing large amounts of fluorite crystal. Glass of this kind reduces chromatic aberration (color fringing), for pin sharp images with natural color and high contrast.
The Genesis 10.5x44 has 16.0 mm of eye relief, and twist-up eyecups that you set to the right distance from your eyes. In the same series, the Genesis 8.5x44 has 18.5 mm.
Kowa states that the GENESIS PROMINAR prism system delivers a wide field of view and edge to edge sharpness with minimal loss of light, even in low light conditions. With 44 mm objective lenses and an exit pupil of about 4.2 mm, the 10.5x44 helps you pick out details on subjects such as owls or deer around sunrise and sunset.
The 5.6 ft minimum focus gives magnified views of nearby subjects. It lets you study butterflies on a flower, the patterns on a dragonfly's wings, or details of tree bark from a short distance without disturbing the subject.
In the box you will find the binocular, a protective case, a neck strap, stay-on caps and rainguard, and a cleaning cloth. Kowa describes the case as a luxury case and the strap as a comfortable padded strap.
First, use a blower to remove any dust or grit. Then apply a small amount of lens cleaning fluid to a soft lens cloth and gently wipe the lens in a circular motion from the center outwards. Kowa's KR coating repels dirt and fluid.
