  • Lunt Herschel Wedge - 1.25"

The Lunt 1.25" Herschel Wedge provides the highest-contrast and sharpest possible white-light solar views for refractors up to 4" in aperture. By utilizing a precision prism to safely divert excess energy and incorporating a permanently installed ND3 filter, this wedge delivers views of sunspot details and granulation that are superior to traditional front-mounted film or glass filters.

High-Contrast Solar Views for Refractors up to 4"

A Herschel wedge, or solar wedge, is the optimal solution for high-resolution white-light solar observing. Unlike a filter placed on the front of your telescope, the wedge allows an unfiltered beam of light to enter the instrument, preventing the image degradation and scattering that can soften details. This Lunt 1.25" wedge is specifically designed for refractors up to 4" in aperture, making it the ideal solar accessory for a wide range of high-quality portable telescopes.

Built-in ND3 Filter for Safe Solar Imaging

Safety is paramount in solar astronomy. The Lunt Herschel Wedge manages the intense energy from the sun by design, but the focused image is still far too bright for direct observation. A built-in Neutral Density (ND) 3.0 filter reduces the brightness to a level that is safe for imaging with a planetary or dedicated solar camera.

For visual observation, the image must be dimmed further. You can achieve a comfortable brightness level by adding a 1.25" polarizing filter to your eyepiece and rotating the eyepiece in the diagonal to dial in the perfect view.

    1.25" Format and Straightforward Focusing

Designed to replace your telescope's standard 1.25" star diagonal, the Lunt Herschel Wedge integrates seamlessly into your existing setup. It fits any 1.25" focuser and accepts standard 1.25" eyepieces and accessories. This ensures that if you can reach focus with a typical diagonal in your telescope, you will also reach focus with the Lunt Solar Wedge, eliminating concerns about focuser travel.

Lunt 1.25" Wedge vs. the 2" Model: Aperture and Eyepiece Choice

Lunt offers two sizes of their white-light wedge, and the correct choice depends entirely on your telescope.

    • The 1.25" Wedge (This Model): Is the correct and safe choice for any refractor with an aperture of 4 inches or less.
    • The 2" Wedge: Is designed for larger refractors, from 4" up to 6" in aperture. It also allows the use of 2" eyepieces for wider fields of view. Using a wedge rated for a smaller aperture on a larger telescope is not recommended.
  • What makes the Lunt 1.25" Herschel Wedge better than a front-mounted solar filter?

A Herschel wedge provides superior image contrast and sharpness. Because it allows the main objective to form an image with unfiltered light, it avoids the slight image degradation caused by light passing through a front-mounted filter. This results in finer, higher-contrast details in sunspots and solar granulation.

Is the Lunt 1.25" Herschel Wedge safe for my eyes right out of the box?

For imaging, yes. For visual use, you need an additional filter. The built-in ND3 filter reduces the sun's brightness to a level safe for cameras, but it is still too bright for comfortable and safe visual use. For observing with your eyes, you must add a polarizing filter to your eyepiece to further dim the view to a comfortable level.

Can I use the Lunt 1.25" Herschel Wedge on my SCT or Newtonian telescope?

No, absolutely not. Herschel wedges are designed for use with refractor telescopes only. Using a wedge with a reflector or catadioptric telescope (like a Schmidt-Cassegrain or Maksutov) will cause a dangerous buildup of heat inside the optical tube, which can permanently damage your telescope and cause severe eye injury.

What is the maximum aperture telescope for the Lunt 1.25" Herschel Wedge?

The Lunt 1.25" Herschel Wedge is designed and rated for use on refractor telescopes with an aperture of 4 inches (102mm) or less. For refractors larger than 4 inches, you must use the 2" Lunt Herschel Wedge.

How do I adjust image brightness with the Lunt 1.25" Wedge on my 80mm f/6 refractor?

For visual use with your 80mm refractor, first thread a standard 1.25" polarizing filter onto the barrel of your chosen eyepiece. After inserting the eyepiece into the wedge, you can simply rotate the eyepiece. As you turn it, you will see the image of the sun get brighter or dimmer, allowing you to set the view to your personal comfort level.

Will I see solar flares or prominences with the Lunt 1.25" Wedge on my Tele Vue 76?

No. The Lunt Herschel Wedge is a white-light solar device, meaning it shows the sun's surface (the photosphere), where you can see sunspots and granulation. Solar flares and prominences are features of the sun's atmosphere (the chromosphere) and are only visible in dedicated Hydrogen-alpha solar telescopes.
