The two numbers in a binocular's name are magnification and objective diameter. Dividing the second by the first gives exit pupil, which determines brightness and how forgiving they are to hold.
- 7x50 and 10x50: The classic astronomy sizes. A 7x50 gives a 7 mm exit pupil, matching a fully dark-adapted young eye; 10x50 shows more detail with a slightly dimmer, less stable view.
- 8x42 and 10x42: Lighter general-purpose sizes that work well for astronomy in suburban skies where a large exit pupil mostly collects light pollution.
- Giant binoculars, 70 mm to 100 mm: Serious deep-sky instruments requiring a tripod or parallelogram mount; interchangeable-eyepiece models allow magnification changes.
- Porro versus roof prism: Porro prisms give more depth perception and better light throughput for the money; roof prisms are more compact and weatherproof but need expensive coatings to match.

- What is the best all-round astronomy binocular?
- A 10x50 porro prism is the traditional answer and remains a good one: enough aperture to show deep-sky objects, light enough to hold, and forgiving of imperfect technique.
- Are image-stabilized binoculars worth it?
- For astronomy, they are one of the few products that genuinely changes what you can see handheld. Stabilization at 12x or 14x reveals detail that a shaky 10x view simply loses.
- Do I need a tripod?
- Above 10x or above roughly 1 kg, yes for comfortable extended viewing. For giant binoculars a parallelogram mount is far better than a tripod because it allows seated observation near zenith.
- How do I know if my binoculars are collimated?
- Look at a bright star and slowly move the binoculars away from your eyes. If the two images separate rather than merging cleanly, they are out of alignment. Bring them to us and we will assess.
