Rotators

Framing a target rarely works out at whatever angle your camera happens to be at, and rotating it by hand means breaking the imaging train, losing your spacing and re-establishing focus. A rotator turns that into a software command. It also lets you hunt for an off-axis guide star without touching anything. David Astro carries rotators in Canada, in stock and shipping from Canada.

A rotator consumes back-focus and adds a joint that must not flex. Send us your imaging train and we will plan both.

Camera Rotation and Why It Matters

Rotation controls composition, guide star availability and how a mosaic panel lines up — three things that otherwise require physical intervention at the telescope.

  • Framing control: Position an elongated galaxy or nebula along the sensor's long axis without dismantling anything, and return to the same angle on a later night.
  • Guide star hunting: With an off-axis guider, rotating the whole assembly sweeps the pickoff prism through a new region of sky, which often finds a star in a sparse field.
  • Position repeatability: Absolute-position rotators return to a recorded angle exactly, which is essential for multi-night projects and mosaics.
  • Back-focus consumption: A rotator adds to the optical train and must be included in your corrector spacing calculation.
  • Load capacity and stiffness: The rotator carries the whole camera assembly and must not flex, since any movement here appears directly as star elongation.
  • Software integration: Most automation packages can drive a rotator to a plate-solved sky angle, which removes framing from the manual workflow entirely.

Why Choose David Astro for Rotators

A rotator is a convenience component that sits in the most mechanically sensitive part of the train.

  • Spacing calculated with the rotator in place: We supply the full component list so your corrector still lands on its design distance.
  • Load and stiffness assessed: We check the rotator's capacity against your camera, wheel and guider, including the moment when the tube is horizontal.
  • Software compatibility confirmed: We check the rotator works with your automation package before you order.
  • Authorized dealer: Genuine products with manufacturer warranty, in Canadian stock.
  • Ships from Canada: No duties or brokerage fees for Canadian buyers.

Rotators in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a rotator?
Not for a single-target session where you can set the angle by hand. It becomes valuable for remote operation, multi-night projects, mosaics and off-axis guiding in sparse fields.
How much back-focus does it use?
It varies by model, typically 15 to 25 mm. This has to come out of your corrector's spacing budget alongside the camera and filter wheel, so plan the whole train together.
Can a rotator cause star elongation?
If it flexes under load, yes. It carries the entire camera assembly at the end of the train, so a rotator undersized for your payload shows up directly in your stars.
Will it work with my software?
Most modern rotators integrate with the common automation packages and can be driven to a plate-solved angle. Tell us what you use and we will confirm.
