Finder Accessories

Finder brackets are one of the few genuinely unstandardized parts of a telescope. A finder from one manufacturer often will not fit another's shoe, a lost bracket can render a perfectly good finder useless, and dew forms on a small finder objective faster than on the main telescope. David Astro carries finder accessories in Canada, held in our Canadian warehouse.

Compatibility here is a matter of matching a specific shoe to a specific bracket. Tell us the finder and the telescope and we will confirm what fits.

Brackets, Bases and Finder Maintenance

Everything here either attaches a finder to a telescope, keeps it aligned, or keeps it usable through a damp night.

  • Finder shoes and bases: The dovetail receiver that bolts to the telescope. Patterns vary between manufacturers, and adapter bases exist for many combinations.
  • Finder brackets and rings: Hold the finder itself with alignment screws, in both spring-loaded and six-screw designs. Spring-loaded brackets are quicker to align and slightly less rigid.
  • Illuminated reticles: Replacement or upgrade eyepieces with adjustable red crosshairs, which make centring far easier than a dark crosshair on a dark sky.
  • Finder dew shields and heaters: Small objectives dew quickly, and a finder that fogs first often ends navigation for the evening.
  • Reflex sight mounts and bases: Bases for red-dot and circle-projection sights, including risers that clear a dew shield.
  • Alignment tools: Adapters that allow a finder to be aligned indoors on a distant object rather than fumbling in the dark.

Why Choose David Astro for Finder Accessories

Most finder problems are fit problems, and fit is checkable in advance.

  • Shoe and bracket matched: We confirm the finder, the bracket and the telescope's mounting shoe all match, or identify an adapter base where they do not.
  • Dew control included: We will mention a finder dew heater when your main scope has one, since a fogged finder ends navigation just as effectively.
  • Replacements for older finders: Lost brackets and bases for discontinued equipment can often be sourced through dealer channels.
  • Authorized dealer: Genuine parts with manufacturer warranty, in Canadian stock.
  • Ships from Canada: No duties or brokerage fees for Canadian buyers.

Finder Accessories in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions

Will my finder fit another telescope?
Only if the shoe pattern matches, and there is no single standard. Tell us both the finder and the telescope and we will confirm, or find an adapter base.
Spring-loaded or six-screw bracket?
Spring-loaded is faster to align and adequate for most use. Six-screw brackets hold alignment better through transport and are preferable if the telescope travels frequently.
Is an illuminated reticle worth it?
Considerably, especially under dark skies where a plain crosshair disappears against the background. Adjustable brightness matters, since a bright reticle overwhelms faint stars.
Do finders need dew heaters?
Small objectives dew quickly and often before the main telescope. A small heater band draws very little power and prevents losing your navigation halfway through the night.
