Desiccants

Fungus on an optical coating is permanent, and it grows in warm, humid, still air — which describes a sealed case in an unheated Canadian basement almost exactly. Rechargeable desiccant costs very little and prevents the one kind of storage damage that cannot be undone. David Astro carries desiccant products in Canada, in stock and shipping from Canada.

Placement and recharging frequency matter as much as quantity. Tell us where your equipment is stored and we will suggest an approach.

Moisture Control in Storage

Desiccant absorbs water from the air in a sealed volume. Its effectiveness depends on the volume being sealed, the desiccant being active, and someone remembering to recharge it.

  • Rechargeable silica gel: Reactivated by heating in an oven, so a single pack lasts indefinitely if maintained. Far more economical than disposable sachets.
  • Colour-indicating types: Change colour when saturated, which is the only practical way to know when recharging is needed.
  • Camera and sensor chamber desiccant: Small plugs specific to cooled camera bodies, preventing frost on the sensor window during deep cooling.
  • Case and cabinet packs: Larger quantities for eyepiece cases, storage cabinets and telescope tubes in long-term storage.
  • Sealed volume required: Desiccant only works in a closed space. In an open cabinet it saturates quickly and achieves nothing.
  • Recharging schedule: Frequency depends on humidity and how often the case is opened. Indicating desiccant removes the guesswork.

Why Choose David Astro for Desiccants

This is a small purchase that prevents the most expensive kind of storage damage.

  • Storage advice for Canadian conditions: Unheated garages and basements cycle through large humidity swings, and we advise on placement accordingly.
  • Camera desiccant specified correctly: Cooled camera bodies use specific plug formats, and using the wrong one can leave the chamber unsealed.
  • Sealed storage recommended together: Desiccant without a sealed case does nothing, and we will point that out rather than sell it alone.
  • Authorized dealer: Genuine products, in Canadian stock, shipped domestically.
  • No cross-border fees: Canadian orders arrive without duties or brokerage charges.

Desiccants in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prevent fungus on optics?
Store in a dry, sealed environment with active desiccant, or in a well-ventilated dry room. Fungus needs humidity and still air, so either removing the moisture or moving the air works.
How often should I recharge desiccant?
When the indicator changes colour, which depends on your humidity and how often the case is opened. In a damp basement this may be every few months; in a dry room, much less often.
Does my cooled camera need desiccant?
Yes, and it is a maintenance item. As the sensor chamber's desiccant saturates, frost forms on the sensor window during deep cooling. Most cooled cameras have a replaceable or rechargeable plug.
Is a sealed case necessary?
For desiccant to work, yes. In an unsealed container it absorbs moisture from the whole room and saturates without protecting anything.
