Is a single set screw good enough?

For visual use with a light tube, generally yes. For imaging with a heavy train, a face-clamping design is markedly more secure and removes a common source of small unexplained shifts.

Why is my dovetail marked?

A knife-edge or point-contact screw concentrates all the clamping force in one place. A flat-jaw clamp matched to the dovetail angle spreads the load and does not mark the bar.

Can I upgrade the clamp on my mount?

On many mounts, yes, and it is inexpensive relative to its effect. Tell us the mount model and we will confirm what replacements exist.

Do I need a safety stop?

Strongly recommended. Without one, a clamp loosened by vibration can allow the dovetail to slide right out, and that failure is always expensive.
