Electronic Accessories
A modern imaging rig is a small outdoor computer network running in the cold. Hubs, cables, power distribution, WiFi modules and controllers determine whether it runs unattended for eight hours or drops a connection at 2 a.m. David Astro carries electronic accessories in Canada, shipping from Canadian stock.
Most overnight failures we help diagnose are power or cable failures rather than software ones. Tell us what your rig is doing and we will help you find the actual cause.

View full detailsElectronics That Keep a Rig Running
Reliability comes from short cable runs, adequate current headroom, and connectors that survive repeated cold cycling.
- Powered USB hubs: Mount-top hubs that shorten cable runs to cameras and focusers, since long unpowered USB runs are a leading cause of intermittent disconnections.
- Power distribution boxes: Convert one supply into regulated outputs for mount, camera, dew heaters and focuser, with individual fusing.
- WiFi and network modules: Wireless control of mounts and accessories, removing a data cable from the moving part of the rig.
- Cables: Cold-flexible cabling in appropriate gauge, since standard PVC cable stiffens dramatically below minus 20 and can drag the mount.
- Controllers and interface boxes: Devices that bridge focusers, rotators, flat panels and sensors into a single control environment.
- Cable management: Clips, wraps and routing hardware that prevent the snag which ends a session and can damage a focuser.
Why Choose David Astro for Electronic Accessories
We troubleshoot these rigs regularly, so the recommendations come from failure patterns rather than specifications.
- Cold-weather cabling advice: We recommend cable types that stay flexible below minus 20, because stiff cable pulls on the mount and shows up as guiding error.
- Current headroom calculated: We total your loads and specify distribution with margin, since running near capacity causes the intermittent faults that are hardest to diagnose.
- USB run length considered: We keep camera connections short with a mount-top hub, which resolves most unexplained disconnection problems.
- Authorized dealer: Genuine products with manufacturer warranty, in Canadian inventory and shipped domestically.
- Ships from Canada: No duties or brokerage fees for Canadian buyers.
Electronic Accessories in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions
- Why does my camera keep disconnecting?
- Usually a long USB run, an unpowered hub, or a marginal power supply. Moving to a powered hub on the mount with short cables to the camera resolves the majority of these cases.
- Do I need a power distribution box?
- Once you are running mount, camera, focuser and dew heaters, yes. Individual fusing and regulated outputs prevent one fault taking down the whole rig, and it removes a tangle of separate supplies.
- What cable should I use in winter?
- Silicone or otherwise cold-rated cable. Standard PVC stiffens below about minus 20 and can exert enough force on the mount to affect guiding, quite apart from the risk of snagging.
- Is WiFi control reliable outdoors?
- Generally yes at short range, and it removes a cable from the moving parts. For unattended all-night operation, many imagers still prefer a wired connection to the control computer for the critical link.
