Can a dew heater hurt image quality?

Yes, if run too hot. Excess heat creates convection currents inside the tube that blur detail. A controller set to hold the optic just above dew point avoids this entirely.

How many channels do I need?

One per optic that dews, which for a typical imaging rig means main scope, guide scope and sometimes the camera window — three or four channels is common.

Where should the strap sit?

Just behind the objective or corrector, on the tube rather than over the glass. Placing it too far back means the heat never reaches the surface that is actually radiating.

Will a heater drain my battery?

A regulated system uses far less than an unregulated one, but heaters remain a significant load. Budget for them separately when sizing a battery for an all-night session.
