  • Pegasus Astro Saddle Powerbox

The Pegasus Astro Saddle Powerbox integrates a robust, dual-format telescope saddle with a comprehensive power and data hub, supporting up to a 40kg / 88 lbs payload on both Losmandy and Vixen plates. It delivers a total of 10A of power through four software-switchable 12V outputs and two 4A PWM channels for dew control. An onboard USB hub with two USB3.1 and two USB2 ports, combined with a built-in environmental sensor accurate to ±0.5°C, consolidates your entire imaging rig's infrastructure into a single, cable-managed unit.

    Dual Losmandy/Vixen Saddle: A 40kg / 88 lbs Payload Capacity Platform

At its core, the Saddle Powerbox is a high-capacity mounting platform designed for stability and universal compatibility. The saddle accepts both the wider Losmandy D-style plates and the narrower Vixen V-style plates, eliminating the need for adapters. With a supported weight of 40kg (88 lbs), it provides a rigid foundation for heavy optical tubes and fully-loaded imaging trains, ensuring your setup remains secure throughout the night.

    10A Power Distribution: 4 x 12V and 2 x PWM Outputs

This device simplifies field power management by centralizing all your 12V equipment. It features four 12V DC outputs that share a total maximum current of 10A, perfect for powering your mount, camera, and other accessories from a single source. Two additional, dedicated PWM channels can each supply up to 4A, allowing for precise, software-controlled regulation of dew heater strips to prevent moisture buildup on your optics.

    • Software Control: Every 12V port can be switched on or off through the Pegasus Astro Unity Platform software, giving you remote control over your entire rig.
    • Flexible Outputs: The two PWM channels can also be configured to function as standard, constant 12V outputs if you don't require dew control.

Integrated USB 3.1 Hub: 2 SuperSpeed and 2 High-Speed Ports

Cable drag is a primary source of tracking errors and connection failures. The Saddle Powerbox places a 4-port USB hub directly on your telescope, reducing the number of cables running back to your computer to just one. Two USB3.1 SuperSpeed ports provide the bandwidth needed for modern, high-resolution CMOS cameras, while two USB2 High-Speed ports are ideal for your mount, guide camera, or electronic focuser.

Environmental Monitoring: Sensors for ±0.5°C Accuracy and 5-15V Input

Integrated sensors provide critical data about your observing conditions and power supply. An onboard sensor measures ambient temperature with ±0.5°C accuracy and relative humidity, allowing the control software to calculate the dew point and automatically manage your heaters. A built-in voltmeter monitors the input voltage from 5V to 15V, alerting you if your field battery is running low before it impacts your session.

Saddle Powerbox vs. A Separate Saddle and Powerbox

While using separate components allows you to mix and match brands, the integrated design of the Saddle Powerbox offers a clear advantage in efficiency and cable management. A traditional setup requires a saddle, a separate powerbox mounted nearby, a USB hub, and a web of power and data cables connecting them all. The Saddle Powerbox consolidates these three devices into one unit, drastically reducing cable clutter, minimizing potential points of failure, and creating a cleaner, more balanced, and faster-to-deploy astrophotography rig.

  • What types of dovetail plates are compatible with the Saddle Powerbox?

The Saddle Powerbox features a dual saddle design, making it compatible with both the 3-inch Losmandy (D-style) plates and the 1.75-inch Vixen (V-style) plates without needing any adapters.

What is the total power output of the Saddle Powerbox?

The unit can deliver a maximum electric current of 10A in total. This is distributed across the four 12V outputs. The two PWM dew heater channels are rated for an additional 4A each.

What are the PWM outputs on the Saddle Powerbox used for?

The two 12V PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) outputs are designed specifically for powering dew heaters. The Pegasus Astro software uses data from the built-in temperature and humidity sensor to automatically adjust the power level, providing just enough heat to prevent dew without introducing tube currents. Each channel can supply up to 4A.

How does the Saddle Powerbox help manage cables on an 8" SCT setup?

For an 8" SCT with an imaging camera, guide camera, and focuser, you would typically run at least three USB cables and three power cables down from the scope. With the Saddle Powerbox, you connect these devices directly to the saddle itself. This leaves only one USB3 cable and one 12V power cable running from the mount, dramatically reducing the risk of snags and tracking errors.

Will the Saddle Powerbox's 40kg capacity support a Celestron C11 on a Losmandy plate?

Yes. A standard Celestron C11 optical tube weighs around 12.5 kg (27.5 lbs). The Saddle Powerbox has a supported weight capacity of 40kg (88 lbs), leaving ample capacity for a heavy camera, filter wheel, guide scope, and other accessories.

Can I control the power outputs of the Saddle Powerbox remotely?

Yes. All four of the 12V outputs can be switched ON or OFF independently using the included Pegasus Astro Unity Platform software. This allows you to remotely power cycle a camera or other device without having to physically touch the telescope.
