Cables
Cables cause more lost imaging nights than any other component, and almost none of those failures are electrical. Standard PVC cable stiffens dramatically below minus 20 and pulls on the mount, long unpowered USB runs drop connections, and a loop that snags during a meridian flip can damage a focuser. David Astro carries cables in Canada, in stock here and shipped without customs delays for Canadian buyers.
Length, gauge and cold flexibility are the three specifications that matter. Tell us your rig and we will list what you need.

The goal is the shortest possible runs, adequate conductor size, and material that stays flexible at the temperatures you actually observe in.
- Cold-flexible power cables: Silicone-jacketed and cold-rated cable that stays supple below minus 20, where standard PVC becomes stiff enough to exert real force on the mount.
- Conductor gauge: Voltage drop scales with length and inversely with cross-section. A thin power lead is a frequent and easily fixed cause of cold-weather mount stalls.
- USB cable length: Long unpowered runs are the leading cause of camera disconnections. A mount-top powered hub with short camera cables solves most of them.
- Connector types: Locking and threaded connectors resist vibration and accidental disconnection far better than friction-fit plugs.
- Right-angle connectors: Reduce the strain radius at the device, which matters where a cable exits a camera on a rotating assembly.
- Length discipline: Excess cable is what snags. Cables cut or specified to the actual run length are safer than long ones coiled up.
Why Choose David Astro for Cables
We troubleshoot enough overnight failures to know that cable choice is not a detail.
- Cold-rated by default: We recommend cable that stays flexible at Canadian winter temperatures, because stiff cable both snags and drags on the mount.
- Gauge specified for the run: We size conductors against current and length, which prevents the voltage sag that causes mysterious stalls.
- Layout advice: We help plan routing and service loops so a meridian flip does not snag anything.
- Authorized dealer: Genuine products, in Canadian stock, shipped domestically.
- No cross-border fees: Canadian orders arrive without duties or brokerage charges.
Cables in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions
- Why does my rig fail in winter but not summer?
- Two reasons, both cable-related: stiff cable exerts force on the mount, and higher current draw plus a thin or long power lead drops voltage below the mount's tolerance.
- How long can a USB cable be?
- Shorter than most people run. Keep camera cables under a couple of metres to a powered hub on the mount, and take the longer run from the hub to the computer.
- What gauge power cable do I need?
- Thicker than it seems. Voltage drop rises with length and current, and dew heaters plus a mount can draw considerably. Tell us your loads and run length and we will specify.
- How do I stop cables snagging?
- Use the shortest cables that reach, route them along the tube and mount rather than hanging free, and leave a deliberate service loop that takes up slack during a meridian flip.
