White Light
White-light solar observation is the most accessible branch of astronomy and the least forgiving of shortcuts. A correct full-aperture filter shows sunspots, granulation and faculae safely in daylight; an incorrect one can cause permanent eye injury in less than a second. David Astro carries white-light solar filters in Canada, stocked domestically and ready to ship.
We will not supply an unsafe configuration. If you are unsure whether a filter suits your telescope, ask us first — this is the one category where guessing is genuinely dangerous.

View full detailsSafe White-Light Solar Filtration
Every safe method blocks the sunlight before it enters the telescope, or diverts almost all of its energy out of the optical path. Nothing at the eyepiece end is acceptable.
- Full-aperture film filters: Metallized polymer film in a cell fitted over the objective, giving a neutral or slightly blue-white solar image at very low cost.
- Full-aperture glass filters: Coated optical glass, more durable and often giving a warmer image, at higher cost and weight.
- Herschel wedges: For refractors only, diverting the great majority of solar energy out of the back of the wedge and passing a small fraction to the eyepiece with additional filtration.
- Solar finders: Pinhole or projection finders that let you aim safely, since an unfiltered optical finder is itself a hazard.
- Cell fit and security: A filter that can be lifted off by wind is a serious risk. Proper cells fit snugly and are secured, not balanced in place.
- Aperture stops: Off-axis stops for large telescopes, reducing aperture and heat load while improving the image in daytime seeing.
Why Choose David Astro for White-Light Solar Filters
Authenticity and correct fit are safety requirements here, not preferences.
- Genuine filters only: As an authorized dealer we supply manufacturer product with verified coatings, which matters in a category where counterfeit solar film has circulated.
- Front-mounted, full-aperture, always: We do not supply eyepiece-end solar filters under any circumstances, because they sit where the telescope has concentrated the full solar energy.
- Fit measured properly: We size the cell to your telescope's actual outer diameter including any dew shield, so it seats securely and cannot be dislodged.
- Herschel wedge suitability checked: Wedges are for unobstructed refractors only, and we confirm your telescope is appropriate before supplying one.
- Ships from Canada: In-stock filters delivered domestically without duties or brokerage fees.
White-Light Solar Filters in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I check a solar filter is still safe?
- Hold it up to a bright lamp and look for pinholes, scratches, creases or coating separation. Any visible defect means replacement. Never repair a solar filter with tape.
- Film or glass?
- Film gives excellent image quality for very little money and is lighter on the front of the tube. Glass is more durable and less easily damaged in handling. Both are safe when genuine and undamaged.
- Can I use a Herschel wedge on my Schmidt-Cassegrain?
- No. Herschel wedges are for unobstructed refractors only. In a catadioptric or reflector, the concentrated energy inside the closed tube can cause damage before it ever reaches the wedge.
- Do I need a special finder?
- Yes. An unfiltered finder scope is a serious hazard when pointed at the Sun. Use a pinhole or shadow-projection solar finder, or cap the finder entirely and aim by the telescope's shadow.
