  • Baader DV-Series PAN/EQ Dual Doverail Saddle - 370mm

The Baader PAN/EQ Dual Doverail Saddle offers a single, robust mounting solution for telescopes using either the 3" Losmandy D-style or the Vixen V-style dovetail standard. Its extended length and substantial mass are engineered to improve the balance of front-heavy or back-heavy optical tubes, often reducing the need for additional counterweights. This saddle is designed for absolute stability, utilizing three brass clamping blocks and toothed contact surfaces to eliminate any possibility of twisting or shifting during an imaging session.

Baader's Dual Saddle: 3" Losmandy & Vixen Clamping

This saddle eliminates the need for adapter plates or swapping hardware by natively accepting the two most common dovetail standards in astronomy. One side is machined for the wider 3" Losmandy-style "D" plate, while the other is profiled for the narrower Vixen-style "V" plate. This dual-format design provides maximum flexibility, allowing you to securely mount virtually any telescope to your mount without compromise.

Extended Length for Superior Balance & Stability

The significant length of this saddle provides a long contact area with your dovetail bar, distributing the clamping force and preventing flexure or rotation. Its mass is not just a byproduct of its solid construction; it acts as a functional counterweight. By shifting the saddle's center of gravity, you can achieve much finer balance with heavy equipment, especially on German Equatorial Mounts where balance is critical for tracking accuracy.

Secure Grip with Brass Clamps & Toothed Surfaces

Baader engineered this saddle for a non-slip, high-friction connection. Three wide clamping blocks made from brass press the dovetail firmly against the opposite jaw without marring its surface. These opposing jaws feature toothed surfaces, maximizing the points of contact to create a rigid, interlocking grip. The large clamping handles sit flush with the saddle's base, and for added security, they include an Allen screw head allowing you to apply extra torque with a wrench for a truly immovable connection.

  • What is the advantage of the Baader PAN/EQ Dual Doverail Saddle's design?

The primary advantage is its native compatibility with both 3" Losmandy-style and Vixen-style dovetail bars. This eliminates the need for adapters, reduces potential points of flexure, and allows you to use a wide variety of optical tubes on a single mount without changing the saddle.

How does the Baader 370mm saddle help balance a telescope?

Its extended length and significant mass act as a built-in counterweight. For large, back-heavy telescopes like Schmidt-Cassegrains with heavy cameras attached, this saddle allows the entire tube to be positioned further forward, making it much easier to achieve perfect balance on both axes without adding extra counterweights to the mount's counterweight shaft.

Will the Baader Dual Doverail Saddle mark or damage my dovetail bar?

No. The saddle uses three wide clamping blocks made of brass, which is softer than the aluminum typically used for dovetail bars. This ensures a firm, secure grip that will not dig into or scratch your equipment, even when tightened firmly.

I have a large 11" SCT that is difficult to balance. How can the Baader PAN/EQ saddle help?

An 11" SCT is a perfect use case for this saddle. Its long mounting surface provides superior stability for a large OTA, preventing any twisting. More importantly, its mass helps counteract the back-heavy nature of an SCT equipped with cameras and other accessories, allowing for precise balance which is critical for accurate GoTo performance and long-exposure tracking.

Can I piggyback a camera or guide scope using the Baader 370mm saddle?

Yes. The front end of the saddle is designed to allow the attachment of accessories like the Baader Stronghold Tangent Assembly. This allows you to mount a second camera for wide-field imaging alongside your main telescope, capturing starfields without the main telescope tube appearing in the frame.

Is the Baader PAN/EQ Dual Doverail Saddle compatible with my mount?

The saddle comes pre-drilled with a variety of hole patterns to fit many popular mounts. It is designed for broad compatibility, but you should always check the hole spacing on your specific mount top to ensure a direct fit or to determine if an adapter plate is needed.
